Villain categories

Villains can be categorized into five different subtypes, villains who: 1.) Believe they are doing the right thing (the ends justifies the means) E.g. Magneto (X-men). 2.) Are just scary and mad, or live for destruction, there's no plot nor any obvious reason for a particular target. E.g. The Joker (The Dark Knight) 3.) Seeks revenge, e.g. Khan Star Trek. 4.) Wants power (rule the world), e.g. Blofeldt (James Bond). 5.) Are henchmen, subordinates or robots. They are either without a will, do it for fun or lack of intelligence. E.g. Jaws (James Bond films).

#4 Ra's al Ghul

Batman villain from:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372784/
Batman Begins

Ra's al Ghul is the perfect villain from DC comics universe, portrayed by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins. Ghul belongs to subtype 1. He leads a group of men with history dating back centuries. They are not terrorists nor vigilante men. They protect civilizations by destroying evil. And by doing so they themselves are evil, which they are aware of, the ends justifies the means or might is right. Killing innocent people is just collateral damage. The prize has to be paid to keep balance. This is made visually clear in the best scene of Batman Begins when Ghul realizies he's going to die in the train, he doesn't scream or curse, he simply closes his eyes.

"Gotham's time has come. Like Constantinople or Rome before it the city has become a breeding ground for suffering and injustice. It is beyond saving and must be allowed to die. This is the most important function of the League of Shadows. It is one we've performed for centuries. Gotham... must be destroyed. "

Among these are Khan a dictator who ruled vast parts of the Earth. Actually "Khan" is a title for a ruler in Turkic and Mongolian languages. Tricking the Enterprise crew into believeing they are friendly, Khan and his followers try to kidnap the ship. Eventually Kirk wins and punishes Khan by exiling them to a dangerous but habitable planet called Ceti Alpha V. However a catastrophy resulting in massive environmental and orbit changes on the planet turned things around. In 2285 when Star Fleet were to investigate Ceti Alpha VI they mistook it for the V planet, meeting Khan and providing him a way out. Mad with revenge he sets out for Kirk at all cost.

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure. "
