Villain categories

Villains can be categorized into five different subtypes, villains who: 1.) Believe they are doing the right thing (the ends justifies the means) E.g. Magneto (X-men). 2.) Are just scary and mad, or live for destruction, there's no plot nor any obvious reason for a particular target. E.g. The Joker (The Dark Knight) 3.) Seeks revenge, e.g. Khan Star Trek. 4.) Wants power (rule the world), e.g. Blofeldt (James Bond). 5.) Are henchmen, subordinates or robots. They are either without a will, do it for fun or lack of intelligence. E.g. Jaws (James Bond films).

The Golden Compass

Marisa Coulter or Mrs. Coulter as she is almost always called, is an ambivalent villain in Chris Weitz adaptation of Philip Pullman's book the Golden Compass (belongs to the trilogy "His Dark Materials") and portrayed by Nicole Kidman. Mother to the heroine and once together with the heroine's father. She undergoes many turns throughout the story (I'm referring also to the books). But since she belongs to subtype 1, her belief is stronger at first, and she really is a evil-doer. Working for the "Gobblers" pursuing to cut the bond between child and daimon to investigate and stop "dust". Later on the belief is replaced by guilt and motherhood-feelings and in the midst of all her evil there is good, which she shows at the end of "the amber spyglass".
